Linux Comics

  What it is:   The Linux open source operating system is gaining popularity in schools because of the enormous savings that open source can offer.  Ubuntu is the most popular Linux operating system in schools, learn more about it here.   Hackett and Bankwell Worldwide have created two comic books that are designed to teach readers about Linux.  There are two free e-book downloads that take the reader on a journey with the iconic Linux penguin.  The first e-book focuses specifically on Ubuntu. How to integrate Linux Comics into the classroom:   These comics are an outstanding resource to learn about Linux and the Linux operating system Ubuntu.  I learned a lot myself reading through these!  Use these comics to teach students, or read though them yourself to get a better understanding of Linux.  Whether you use Linux at your school or not, it is important to expose students to the different operating systems available.     Tips:  If you want a print copy of the Linux Comics, they can be purchased from the Hackett and Bankwell website as well.   Leave a comment and tell us how you are using Linux Comics  in your classroom.

Inauguration Speech Generator

What it is: With President Obama’s Inauguration speech looming on the horizon, this site is worth a look.  Inauguration Speech Generator is like a mad lib, fill in the blank that generates a speech for President Obama to say.  :)   Students enter words in the blanks according to the part of speech that is requested and then read the speech they have written for our soon to be president.  

 

How to integrate Inauguration Speech Generator into the classroom:  This is  a great lead in to teach students about the Inauguration of President Obama.  It is also a fun way to practice those parts of speech!  Students can fill in the blanks individually and share with a partner, or a speech can be generated as a whole class.  This would be a fun thing to do right before the inauguration.  Save the students version of the speech.  They can compare and contrast their speech with the actual inauguration speech after viewing it.

 

Tips: The inauguration is supposed to be live on CNN, it would be fun to watch live but I suspect that Internet may be slow that day!  Those of you with cable in the classroom take advantage!!

I haven’t yet used the inauguration speech generator, but it looks pretty cool. I’ll try to use it next week with with my students.

I just came across your blog, and I gotta say that it’s pretty useful. I like how your blog postings have three sections on how to describe the technology, how to integrate, and helpful tips. I especially think that the integrating piece is important for teachers.
