What it is:  Today I was truly inspired by a fellow blogger.  Mike Summers is relatively new to the educational blogging scene and even relatively new to the education scene, but as I read his posts I was inspired for change.  Mike has written 23 posts and after I read his first three I couldn’t help but spend the next hour (and every 5 min. break between classes) to read all 23.  As I read the posts on his blog, SM@RT Education Technology Services Inc. Education 1 to 1,  I kept saying aloud, “exactly! This is right on with what I have been thinking, this is what keeps me up at night.”  After getting through about half of the posts it was time for lunch, I joined my colleagues in the teachers lounge and reiterated what I  had been reading.  It started an amazing discussion with those who were present.  When I finished reading I was ready to take on the world.  If there are so many like-minded educators and people who are passionate about education succeeding, why are we stuck in the rut we are in?

How to integrate Education 1 to 1 into the classroom:  This is a blog that you should take the time to read and respond to.  I am passionate about technology and technology integration in the classroom, but I know that putting the best technology in the world into the classroom is not going to change education.  Education needs to change on a foundational level.  We need to transform the way we are teaching from the 3 R’s  “RAM, Remember, Regurgitate” and teach our students how to think critically, creatively, and collaboratively.  We need students who are problem solvers.  Technology is always going to feel forced in the traditional classroom because it invites students to create, solve problems, and work together.  In the traditional classroom technology acts as a replacement for a chalk board but does essentially the same old thing.  It may be  more visually appealing but it is not transforming our students.  (More of this in my next issue of iLearn ezine…taking longer to complete than expected!)  Read Mike’s blog, it will inspire you, it will change the way you approach technology, your students, and your classroom.  Next, start a conversation with other educators.  There has got to be a way that we can change education and shape it into something that we can be proud of.  Something that will benefit our students and make them better human beings.  Isn’t that why we entered education in the first place?

Learning 2.0 a Colorado Conversation

Voice Thread Update

 

What it is:   Voice Thread is an amazing site that just keeps getting better!  Voice Thread is the site that makes outstanding web 2.0 slide shows interactive and collaborative.  You can read my original posts about Voice Thread hereVoice Thread came out with an outstanding new update yesterday, the ability to take your Voice Thread’s with you via an iPod!!!  Whenever you export a Voice Thread, you now have the option to download a full sized, high resolution movie version or one that has been formatted to go directly onto you iPod, or iPhone- how sweet is that?!  Additional new features include the ability to clone your Voice Thread so that you can have a backup copy or a copy of the same Thread to use with different audiences.  Voice Thread now supports Microsoft Office 2007 formats when uploading into your Voice Threads with Microsoft Photo Story 3 video supporting coming.  

 

How to integrate the Voice Thread Updates into the classroom:  So, why am I so excited about the new Voice Thread features?  The ability to save a Voice Thread onto an iPod or iPhone opens up a whole new realm of possibilities in the classroom.  Now you can create learning activities with Voice Thread that are portable for your students.  You can extend your students learning day with a Voice Thread based on your curriculum and the students needs using an iPod.  Math explinations,  sight words, phonics, and read alongs can all be created with Voice Thread and uploaded onto the iPod.  Create a reading buddies program with pictures and sound using Voice Thread.  To find out more about the Reading Buddies program click here.

iKnow Social Learning

 

What it is:   Wow, I just spent two hours playing on and reviewing this site and could have spent the rest of my day here!  iKnow Social Learning is a social networking study tool created by Cerego in Japan.  The site brings social networking to studying and learning in a really inventive way.  Students (or you) sign up and are asked what languages you know, and what languages you want to learn.  Then you are led through a short questionnaire about your interests.  Study recommendations are made based on the questionnaire.  Courses are available to enroll in (all free) to help you study and learn.  The courses are created by Cerego and its partners or by other users.  After logging in and filling out the introductory information, you are taken to a personal homepage.  The homepage shows courses that you are enrolled in, your profile, friends, progress, a message center, and any items created by you.  Courses are personalized language learning tools.  Courses are geared for learning English and Japanese with more languages coming soon.   Current English courses created by Cerego include vocabulary development, and SAT study prep.  Courses created by users include everything from introduction to binary to the first presidential debate speech.  There are three modes of study options for each course.  The iKnow study section says the word aloud, gives the definition, and part of speech (if applicable to the course) and then uses the word in a sentence, and gives students the opportunity to practice spelling the word.  After the study session, students are quizzed on the vocabulary.  The next study section is called Dictation.  In this section a sentence using the vocabulary is said aloud, students type the sentence (using correct spelling) as it is said.  This is great for memorization, spelling, and those typing skills.  The last study section is called Flash Study and provides students with a beat the clock type game to improve speed and accuracy.  The current provided courses are appropriate for intermediate English language learners, and high school and college students.  However, iKnow allows for users to create courses (called lists).  With the ability to create lists, the iKnow study site could be used as early as second or third grade and up.   As a teacher, you can create lists for your students to study based on your curriculum.  The lists are very simple to create and you can attach sound, video, and images from Flickr Creative Commons (integrated) or upload your own images.   Students have access to all courses they have enrolled in, an online journal, and their study results.  Each course shows who created the course or list, the level of study, the number of items to learn in the course, the recommended length of study, and the privacy setting on the course.  After a student enrolls in the course, their progress is tracked to provide students with exactly the practice they need.  iKnow has the capability of connecting and integrating with other social networking platforms like Twitter, Skype, Delicious and Facebook (and a substantial list of others!)  The high school, college, and professional age group will appreciate the integration capabilities.  As you can tell by the length of this post, I am extraordinarily impressed with this site and the study options it opens up for students (and teachers!).  

 

How to integrate iKnow Social Learning into the classroom:  iKnow Social Learning is the best study tool I have seen in a while!  I love the way that it encourages students to study together, challenge each other, and create solid study habits.  iKnow Social Learning is an amazing way to learn and taps into multiple learning styles with each study session.  Auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learners will all benefit from this site!  Because teachers can create lists (courses) of study, you can create interactive study guides for your students based on your curriculum.  The current courses on iKnow Social Learning are too difficult for the elementary and middle school crowd.  I created a list of my own for third grade vocabulary, it was simple to put together and students would benefit from the properly leveled guide.  Younger students may not use the social aspect of the site as much, but the study options would be perfect for creating and setting up on a classroom computer,  as a center or to use with students in a computer lab setting, or even just to suggest for home use.  The layout of the study sessions makes it ideal for vocabulary words, math vocabulary (or expanded notation), history facts, spelling practice, learning a foreign language, and science vocabulary.  I think that iKnow Social Learning would also be a great place for PLN (professional learning networks) to challenge each other, collaborate, and learn.  Personally, I think with this setup I could know Italian by Christmas 🙂  This is a really incredible tool, I can’t say enough about it!

Toy Maker

 

What it is: Toy Maker is a website full of free paper toy downloads.  While it isn’t directly using technology in the classroom, this is a great site to visit for the free downloads.  Toy Maker has everything from paper animals (origami type), to awesome math and learning toys, to toys that move, and gift boxes.  This site offers really amazing downloads and teaches students how to follow step by step instructions to create their toy. 

 

How to integrate Toy Maker into the classroom:   The math and learning toys on the Toy Maker site are perfect for integrating into your existing curriculum.  Living in Colorado means a lot of indoor recess days in the winter months, these toys offer excellent activities for those indoor days!  The gift boxes are perfect for holiday gifts home (Christmas, Mother’s day, Father’s day, etc.) or for exchanging with learning buddies.   Younger students will enjoy creating one of the animals and writing a story to accompany it.

 

Tips: Share this site with parents, they will love these printables for rainy days at home!

Free Federal Resources for Educational Excellence

 

What it is:  Free Federal Resource for Educational Excellence (that is a mouthful, hence forth shall be known as FREE) is a excellent resource for finding teaching and learning resources from federal agencies.  Resources are broken down in to subjects arts and music, health and physical education, history and social studies, language arts, math, and science.  Subjects are further broken down in to sub categories making it simple to find exactly what you are looking for quickly.  There is also a great section called U.S. Time periods where you can search US history resources by time period.  New sites are added to FREE regularly, you can get the new resources delivered to you by subscribing to the FREE RSS feed.  The teaching and learning resources linked to from the FREE site are valuable to your classroom and will save you loads of time in searching for quality resources.  

 

How to integrate Free Federal Resources for Educational Excellence into the classroom:  Use FREE to find quality online resource for any subject that you are teaching.  Some of the linked websites are specifically for teachers and some are activities and sites for students.  Use this as a first stop when you are creating new lessons or enhancing the good old standby lessons.  The FREEresources will enhance your lessons with rich content for your students.

Studio4Learning

 

What it is: Studio4Learning is a great site for students in fifth through twelfth grades.  It provides students and teachers with free, high-quality videos that can be watched online.  There are ten categories of videos to choose from Math, Sciences, English, Languages, Social Sciences, Business, Arts, Test Prep, Find a Job, and Tutor Corps.  Each category is broken down into several sub categories.  Videos are engaging and teach key skills and concepts in a fun way.  Students can also use the sites search feature to search for a specific topic.

How to integrate Studio4Learning into the classroom:  Students can use Studio4Learning as a place to stop for homework help and to learn or review concepts learned in class.  Teachers can use Studio4Learning as a center, with a projector, or on individual student computers to illustrate new teaching or as a place where students can review information.  Studio4Learning is free to use, if students register (also free) they can bookmark videos.  Teachers can upload class topic videos to Studio4Learning, again free. (Are you seeing a theme here? It is all free!)  As an added bonus, if you have a class website or blog, you can embed videos directly into your site for students to watch on any subject you are studying in class.  


Tips:  Browse through a couple of videos on the site, I know you will be hooked!

Up On My Soapbox

I don’t know if it is because the Democratic National Convention is in Denver, or the candidates demand more attention, or there is more media coverage than usual, or just because I am getting to an age where I am more interested; but this election year I am following everything more closely and digging a little deeper into the different issues.  One of the hot topic issues for me is education.  I have to say, I’m not really compelled by either candidates “plan.”  On the surface the plans sound really good.  Higher pay for teachers= Good.   Merit pay for educators who are going above and beyond= Good.  Education that makes our students global competitors= Good.  Education with a focus on 21st century skills= Good.  High quality education for all= Good.   More money toward education= Good.   My problem comes in how this is actually going to play out.  Simply throwing more money at the education system is not EVER going to solve the problem.  I work in one of the wealthiest counties in the United States.  Our schools have money, technology, great teachers, etc.  And yet, only about 80% of students are graduating high school.  Granted this is significantly higher than the country’s average, but even with all of the advantages that money brings, it still isn’t 100%.

Paying teachers more is a FABULOUS idea and one that I hope moves forward, but just because a teacher is paid more does not mean that education will get better.  Merit pay is a wonderful idea in theory, but HOW do we decide who deserves merit pay, a test, a popularity contest?  Does the government know what a good teacher I am or how invested I am in my students success (I know that this will be delegated to people who may know but really, my own colleagues don’t know what a good teacher I am.  They have no idea that I attend online conferences, conversations, and research.  They have no idea that I update a blog daily giving teachers ideas for integrating technology in their classroom.  They have no idea that I interact with teachers all over the world on a daily basis to learn how to be a better teacher.)  And again, just because I am making more money does not necessarily mean that I am educating students better than I did last week. I am obviously a HUGE fan of 21st century learning and teaching and believe that it is a necessity, but I am not naive enough to think that just because I am teaching 21st century skills that it is going to change the education of America’s children.  There are a host of reasons that kids come to school not ready to learn.  Just because we are teaching the latest and greatest doesn’t mean that our students are ready to soak it all in.

A few weeks ago I was hit with an overwhelming sense that education is so much more than what happens inside the classroom and school.  Kids aren’t coming to school prepared to learn.  They have needs that have to be met before they can take in anything we have to give them (no matter how shiny, new, and expensive it is).  If a child isn’t getting a good breakfast before school they aren’t focused on learning, they are focused on a hungry tummy.  I have had students in my classroom who were being abused.  A child with a cigarette burn on their arm is not concerned about the phonics lesson of the day, no matter how compelling it is.  Kids who are made the “parent” in their home and are put in charge of all their brothers and sisters are thinking about that, not your wonderful math lesson.  When a family member is dying of cancer students aren’t focused on the science lesson.  There are a lot of factors outside the school that put a stress on education.  None of them can be addressed by the school system alone.  Then their are kids growing up in families and communities where education isn’t valued.  This isn’t just happening in inner city schools where kids are practically raising themselves.  I have students who tell me on a daily basis that no one in their family reads…not even a newspaper.  I believe them.  Kids who grow up in a community where education isn’t valued have no reason to succeed and continue their education.  They don’t connect success in life with education and the ability to be a life long learner.   I realized that whenever we hear a success story of a kid who beat all the odds, was the first to graduate high school; made it out of the slums, they always say the same thing…”my mom (grandma, aunt, uncle, dad, grandpa) told me that education was the most important thing.”  Someone in their lives instilled in them the value of education.  We have a large portion of the population who doesn’t value education.  In the wealthier communities it may be because they place more value on the sports and activities that kids are involved in.  In the poorer communities it may be because the parents didn’t get an education that they felt was of value in their lives.

A test is never going to improve education on its own.  Students don’t need to learn to memorize random facts and regurgitate them on a state mandated test.  All that a test shows is superior short term memory.  We live in an age where any information you could ever need to know is at your finger tips all the time.  Any child will tell you “I can just Google it”.  They are right.  Memorization is not necessarily a prized skill any more.  Kids need to learn how to search out information, how to evaluate, how to communicate, how to solve problems, how to think critically, how to work creatively.   Teaching has to be relevant to students or they aren’t going pay attention.  What good is education that doesn’t involve?  Technology opens many of these doors to students but what good is all the technology in the world if we don’t have educators who know how to use it?    Technology is changing daily at an ever increasing rate.  How can we expect educators to teach with technology if we aren’t offering continuous training, state of the art tech support, and the infrastructure to allow it all to happen? Kids need education that is relevant to the world they are living in.  A test, by the way, is NOT relevant.  Kids have enough factors pulling them away from learning, we don’t need to help the situation by making education irrelevant.  The problem is that schools are run by tests.

No Child Left Behind makes me absolutely crazy.  When you listen to the concept it is great, the problem is that it doesn’t play out realistically in schools.  So, all this to say that no matter how good the words sound, education is not going to be an easy fix.  Ever.  I’m not sure that the government can really change the education system.  Communities need to get involved, let kids know how important education is. Families need to come together and support each other in all of their struggles.  Schools need to decide that teachers are going to be provided ongoing education that is relevant to the current global climate.  Teachers need to create lessons that are engaging and teach kids how to learn.   Education is something that everyone has to be “in” on.  Schools can’t do it alone.  Teachers can’t do it alone.  The government can’t do it alone.  It is going to take everyone working together with a common goal to fix this problem.

I recently heard of a local program that I LOVE and must learn more about.  The idea behind the program is to take kids who don’t have wonderful educations, because of all the reasons listed above, and to house them, commune with them, teach them how valuable education is, provide them with a state of the art education, and mentor them.  The students in this program go back to be leaders in their communities.  They take what they have learned and bring it back to their community.  I love the idea of making kids leaders in their communities.  It is programs like this one that are going to change education.  (I will post more about this program for those who are interested).

One last thought:  I was recently getting my hair cut (on the cheap because I’m a teacher).  The gal that was cutting my hair was about 25-30 and carried on a very lively conversation with me while she chopped away.  I was stunned at the lack of grammar, vocabulary, and common sense.  She was telling me about her cheating on-again-off-again boyfriend.  He sounded like a miserable person to have in her life and she seemed to know that he was poison in her life.  But two sentences later she said “I want to have his baby.”  What?  Wait, I just sat through 30 min. of this woman telling me what scum this guy was and she wanted to have his baby.  I asked her why.  I thought maybe she would tell me something like “well maybe if I have his baby he will settle down and want to marry me.”  I couldn’t have been more wrong.  What she told me was, “I really, really want a baby.  My friend just had one and it is so cute.”  Absolutely no thought to how difficult it would be to raise a child making minimum wage, without a father, without a support system, etc.  To me this is common sense.  As I was listening to this woman I couldn’t help but think that if she did have a child, it would most likely end up in the same cycle she was in.  She complained to me while I sat there, about how she was always going to be poor, how she hated school, and how bad her current situation is.  She has no idea that she could change the whole course of her life if she would continue in education.  Heck, I am pretty convinced that if she could learn to speak using proper grammar and better vocabulary she could get anywhere she wanted in life. (Please understand, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this woman wanting to cut hair forever, that is a nobel goal if it is her goal…but she is always going to be frustrated with men, feeling like there is nothing she can do to better herself.)  I think that 90% of my success in life has come in the ability to speak intelligently…I could fool a lot of people into thinking that I am more intelligent than I actually am.  (You may disagree as I write this at 11:30 pm after a full day of teaching AND back to school night *smile*).  My point is, no one told this girl that she didn’t have to stay with this course of life.  She has the ability to do whatever she wants in life but she has to be willing to learn.  I think we live in an age where a degree isn’t as important as the ability to think critically and a willingness to learn.  I don’t have a degree in educational technology, instructional technology, or technology at all.  My degree is in elementary education.  I found my passion and make an effort to learn all I can each day.  Somehow we need to get the word out to kids and families everywhere, education is important and does make a difference.

How to integrate WizIQ into the classroom: WizIQ is a great place to start experimenting with virtual classrooms.  It has a simple to use interface, requires no downloads, and is free.  Record lessons that you are doing with your class so that they can go back and review the lesson online at their lesiure.  This puts students in control of their own learing.  Interact with students during live virtual sessions.  WizIQ is also perfect for students who were absent, have a long term illness that prevents them from being at school, or students who know they will be attending your school for half of the year.  

 

Tips: You can make money by setting up and teaching in a virtual classroom (and lets face it, we could all use a little more of that!)  Your classroom will be visable by search engines and open to students from accross the world.  Don’t let the technology scare you, this is simple to use (even my fellow elementary teachers can get in on this one!)

What it is: I have posted about Voice Thread in the past, but Voice Thread has added a new education community that has some pretty incredible features. Ed.VoiceThread is a secure collaborative network designed specifically for the k-12 school environment. Teachers and students can collaborate around almost any type of media including voice, text, webcam, and drawing commentary in a secure environment. Access is restricted to k-12 educators, students, and administrators to ensure safe classroom collaboration. Ed.VoiceThread is an accountable environment, which means that all users are responsible for their content and behavior. Some added features that you will find on Ed.VoiceThread are, students have individual accounts that are easily viewable to educators, students can create, edit, and manage their own portfolio, students cannot add contacts or send invitations to any users outside of the Ed.Voice Thread community, and they cannot view any content that is not created by an Ed.Voice Thread member. Teachers can quickly view and access all students’ Voice Threads. Voice Threads can be made private or public depending on the assignment and requirements. Ed.VoiceThread comes in two packages one free and the other, called Pro, for $60/year. Free users can only create 3 VoiceThreads, have 75 MB of storage, no uploading of MP3 comments, 30 min of webcam commenting, advertising will be present, single file size limit of 25 MB, and no downloads of the media. How to integrate Ed.VoiceThread into the classroom: Ed.VoiceThread is the ideal place for students and teachers to collaborate and interact with digital media. The added functionality for schools with Ed.VoiceThread is very useful. Students can use Ed.VoiceThread to create digital stories, documentaries, practice and document language skills, explore geography and culture, solve math problems, and much more. As a teacher, I like VoiceThread as a place to teach. Because everything is web-based, you can upload a days lessons to Ed.VoiceThread for students to refer to and collaborate with while doing homework. I well remember the days when I would sit in math class learning the days equations. Everything made perfect sense to me while I was sitting in the classroom watching problems being worked. But at home, with no guide homework seemed impossible. Ed.VoiceThread makes you your students personal tutor. The self paced learning is amazing! I love giving students tools that allow them to be in charge of their own learning. Is there any better lesson in life than knowing how to learn?
